The state of the environment has started to become a more worrying aspect for many of us, especially when we’re considering the future of our younger generation. As well as being the most-polluted city in China, Linfen is also one of the most polluted cities in the world. However, the use of illegal coal mines makes pollution worse, as they are run without regulation.
In Sukinda, it is the drinking water that causes the most concern in relation to pollution, as it contains double the international standard of Hexavalent Chromium, a type of steel that is used for leather tanning. It is shown that 85% of deaths arising from mining are attributed to high levels of chromium exposure.
Due to the level of chemical weapon manufacturing in Dzerzhinsk, it has actually been entered into the Guinness Book of World Records as the most polluted city in the world, which can be attributed to the vast amount of chemical waste that has been dumped over the years.
In the past, there were a number of factories in operation in Azerbaijan that left behind a series of pollution, including a high level of mercury. Despite the factories being closed down, a high level of pollution still remains. Currently, there are no plans underway to reduce the pollution.
Lead processing and mining has meant that Kabwe has been subjected to high levels of lead that was first discovered back in 1902. Little has been done to clean up Kabe, although the World Bank has allocated $40 million to help reduce pollution.
What About Pollution in the UK?
Although not as extreme as other parts of the world, the UK still has a high level of pollution. Recent news shows that high levels of nitrogen dioxide are present within cities in the UK, such as South London, and have been linked to over 5,900 deaths. Although there are many counteract measures in place, the high level of pollution can only be reduced if we all look to make a difference.
