Maintaining any car is important, especially if you want to make sure that it is efficient and effective when you drive it. When you are a fleet manager, and you rely on the vehicles you have for business, these checks become all the more important.

Not only are they about keeping your cars, vans or lorries in perfect working order. But also ensure that your drivers, and those other people on the road are safe.

But what do you need to check in your fleet in order to make sure that every vehicle is the best it can be.

Often these checks should be performed on a daily basis, and whilst they may seem time consuming at first, over time, they will become second nature and not seem so tiresome.

The checks to perform

Here are some of the checks that you should be performing on your fleet vehicles on a daily basis:

  • The condition of the bodywork, windscreen, lights and windows
  • That the number plate is clean
  • Security of roof rack or trailer
  • Conditions of the tyres, including wear and pressure
  • Whether or not a spare wheel and jack is available
  • Level of fluids within the car including oil, coolant and windscreen wash
  • Condition of the battery
  • If there are any oil or waste leaks
  • The seat belts
  • Mirror position
  • Tax discs
  • Whether there is a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, torch and warning triangle
  • Whether there is a handbook for the vehicle

You should also ask your drivers to make sure that the horn, lights, brakes, fuel and washers and wipers all work before they set off. This means that you can be sure that the vehicle is road worthy and ready to face the day.

Why perform these checks?

Now you know what to look out for, you may wonder why these checks are so important. Maintenance checks makes sure that your vehicles remain safe and secure, and cheap to run. It also makes sure that they are safe and in the best condition possible, which reduces the chances of collisions and breakdowns.

These checks also make sure that your reputation is the best it can be and that all your customers are satisfied with the service that you can provide.

You can’t always plan for any issues that can crop up within your fleet, but by checking your vehicles, you can make sure that they are in tip top condition and that you won’t be faced with any issues that could end up costing you money.

My job is to be the customer champion. When I am not working on projects that are meaningful for our customers and our brand, I’m probably online shopping, doing yoga or nattering on the phone.
